New Floating Cycle Roundabout
The bright white 70 meters (230Ft) tall bridge pylon can be seen from far away. Attached to the top are 24 cables that suspend a large bicycle roundabout, 72 meters (236Ft) in diameter, that seems to float over a large new junction for motorized traffic. This roundabout can be found in Eindhoven and it is called Hovenring. The exceptional piece of bicycle infrastructure was built to stand out. It is to be the iconic new landmark that signals ‘you are entering Eindhoven’. At night the slender bike ring is lit from below to further enhance that floating effect.
New Green Lanes (aka protected bike lanes)
"We are seeing an explosion of interest in making bicycling stress-free on busy city streets," says Martha Roskowski of Bikes Belong Foundation, a non-profit touting the paths via its Green Lane Project.
She says U.S. cities have had standard bike lanes for decades, but many riders don't see them as safe enough.
"We're promoting a more active lifestyle," says Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez, adding that many green lanes are receiving federal funds.

The United States Bicycle Route System
The National Corridor Plan map identifies 50-mile wide corridors, both prioritized (numbered) and un-prioritized (faint brown corridors). The plan can change -- based upon state opportunities and interests -- with new corridors or realignments. As corridors become official routes, the wide swaths of color that show the corridors on the map will become solid lines to define actual routes (see USBR 76 and USBR 1 in Virginia as an example). Links to U.S. Bike Route (USBR) maps, state bike maps and informational websites will be provided as they become available.
In 2011 the Oklahoma Legislature passed the Oklahoma Historic Route 66 Bike Trail bill designating the entire length of old highway 66 as a bike route. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation is directed to sign and enhance the route as funding becomes available. Bicycle friendly features on portions of Route 66 are already in highway construction plans. Members of the Oklahoma Bicycle Coalition are promoting awareness of bicycle tourism benefits and gaining community support for the route.

Bronx water plant doubles as driving range
The engineering challenges are formidable. At nine acres, the $95 million driving range is the largest contiguous green roof in the country. So when it rains at the range, it pours, which creates a paradoxical hazard for the plant below. “It’s of paramount importance to the City of New York that this building stay dry, despite being full of water,” said David Burke, the project architect at Grimshaw. So to handle the millions of gallons that can accumulate on the green roof during a storm, the design team has devised a natural filtration system to collect, process, and store the runoff.
Oklahoma Ranks 35th out of 50 as bike-friendly States
Four years ago Oklahoma was ranked 48th in bicycle friendliness. Oklahoma’s bicyclists, along with state agencies and other groups set the goal of improving Oklahoma’s ranking. “In 2011 we ranked 43th,” said Oklahoma Bike Summit Chairman Kevin Mussett, Stillwater. “Jumping 8 places to 35th in one year is the result of a lot of hard work by bicyclists, Oklahoma Department of Transportation, and the Legislature, all working together,” Mussett said.

Net Zero Certified: Two Buildings That Make More Energy Than They Use
The Institute describes the new certification as “linked” to the organization’s larger Living Building Challenge certification. To qualify as a Living Building, a project has to meet 20 “Imperatives” in the categories of site, water, energy, health, materials, equity and beauty. The Institute calls its standard “the most advanced measure of sustainability in the built environment possible today” and “a unified tool for transformative design” providing “a framework for design, construction and the symbiotic relationship between people and all aspects of the built environment.”
Awesome Velodrome Trebles as a Bike Pavilion and Cafe in China
NL Architects was commissioned to design a sweet bike pavilion and cafe as part of a resort development they are working on in southern China. And this is what they came up with: given the sweltering temperatures common in the tropics, the Dutch firm decided to give the project an extended roof that would shade visitors. But then they realized it didn't have to be any old hum drum roof, so they designed a curvy, fenced-off velodrome instead!

Best and brightest: AIA Houston highlights the year's best new architecture
"A project that evolved from a master's thesis in architecture, veloCity explores the potential of Houston's many vacant spaces that emerge in the city's extensive network of highways. Mapping these oddly-shaped unused sites, Muessig has created an infrastructure explicitly designed for biking."

Fastest growth in adult obesity and seventh most obese state in the nation (Oklahoma)
OKC Mayor Recognizes Car Cities are Obese Cities
“I realized I was a perfect example of all the problems Oklahoma City was facing,” Cornett says, who’s since lost 42 pounds. “I had always lived in the suburbs. I always drove my car. I liked to park for free right in front of the door so I didn’t have to walk. If we were at my house when I was raising children, if I had said, ‘OK, let’s go around the block,’ they would have looked for the car keys.”
To counter the obesity problem, the Oklahoma City mayor launched a website to help citizens track their weight loss with the goal of the city losing one million pounds. He also redesigned the city to help the people of Oklahoma City work toward an active and healthy lifestyle through the addition of 400 miles of sidewalks, a 70-acre park in downtown, and a bike master plan that includes the addition of bike lanes as part of an effort dubbed “Project 180.”
